As architects who design private homes, our goal is to create sanctuaries of a sort. The bedroom is especially important because it is the place where you go to get away, relax and unwind from the stresses of everyday life. Once the plans are complete, builders have cleaned up the last of the sawdust and we leave you with the design of your dreams, it’s your job to make the most of it.

If you’ve just completed a recent bedroom remodel, or are looking for ways to add extra comfort and sensuality to your bedroom space, the following tips can help.

  • Be thoughtful about lighting. Ambiance is key for both relaxation and romance, so make sure your bedroom lighting design incorporates soft, diffused light as well as dimmer options so you can control the intensity. Consider remote control lighting and/or placing a switch by the bed so you don’t have to get out of it to make adjustments or turn the lights out.

  • Invest in a high-quality bed. Ideally, you want to spend as much as you can afford on the most comfortable and high-quality bed available. Mattresses should be replaced every 7 to 8 years for the best nights’ sleep.

  • Treat yourself to luxurious sateen sheets. Talk about a smooth and sexy experience; once you’ve slept in these soft and sensuous sheets, all others will pale in comparison. Paired with a comfortable mattress, luxurious sateen sheets will make your bed more of an oasis than it already is.
