What images do the words commercial carpet conjure for you? Odds are, you envision a low-pile, “serviceable” carpet without a whole lot of style. This is a shame because, while it’s true that commercial carpet must stand up to high traffic volume, there is no reason why commercial carpet design shouldn’t rival its residential counterpart when it comes to enhancing a business’s interior design.

Despite what your initial instincts tell you about commercial carpet, it can be whimsical and sleek, even stylish as well as durable.

Commercial Carpet Design: Put Style at the Top of the List

Here is a guide to choosing commercial carpet that is both stylish and durable, so “drab” can never be used as an adjective.

When selecting carpet for your business, be sure to bear in mind what style you're looking for, how flame retardant the carpet is, and how budget-worthy is it (will it have to be replaced in a couple years or will it deal well with high foot traffic and frequent cleanings).

  • Style. While we understand that style is typically at the bottom of the list, we’re migrating it to the top. Carpet fiber materials, quantity, density, loop styles – all this is very important in regards to how long your carpet will last. However, many people overlook that pattern and color helps fabrics to look fresh longer.
  • Fire safety. Of course, safety must be prioritized, and that means paying attention to the fire rating. Odds are, if you’re working with a professional designer or carpet warehouse and specify you want carpet for a commercial application, they will automatically steer you in the right direction. But, just to be safe, know that commercial carpet must have an NBS Smoke Chamber Test of 450 or less and a ASTM E-648 Radiant Panel rating of Class 1 or Class 2, depending on the application. Only view carpet samples that meet these important safety requirements.
  • Application.¬†Budget your carpet selections according to where it will be installed. Calculate foot traffic, rolling traffic, water and/or chemical exposure potential and so on for each area of your business or facility. Then budget for the most durable carpet type you can afford. The money you spend now will be worth the savings in future cleanings, maintenance and replacement should you err on the side of “money savings”.
